My Reading Journey

I was never a voracious reader in the past. My reading experience was limited to studying for academic purposes . Once in a year or so , I would pick up a Chetan Bhagat or Durjoy Dutta book to read during vacations or while travelling for a family trip on the  train.  My  true  love for reading started when I finished my education and I started getting bored with my life. I tried a couple of jobs here and there but realized that I don't necessarily enjoy them . I remember teaching in a school but constantly waiting for the day to be over so that I can go back home and do something that I love. At first , it was binge watching all the TV  shows , but soon even that interest  faded . Then I started watching cooking videos on YouTube as I love cooking. That interest sustained for a little while until I somehow stumbled upon a video where the YouTuber  was gushing about a book that she recently read. The passion with which she was talking about it drew me towards this book. The book was called “ The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak. I wanted to read it but I kept it some where in my mind then I forgot about it. The reason being- Earlier I was intimidated by foreign writers. I used to think I would never understand their dialect or their language. Till then i was reading all those cheesy romances by popular Indian authors like Chetan Bhagat and Durjoy Dutta  that every Indian has read in college.

As I grew older, I stopped enjoying  those  cheesy romances . Soon I started exploring new genres, starting  with  a lot of Novoneel Chakraborty books which were thrilling and filled with suspense. Then came a phase when I  started getting obsessed with Mythology and hence read a lot of Amish Tripathi . Now when I look back , I  think those were not so good compared to what I am currently reading , but I cannot deny that those were the ones that helped me where I am today as a Reader . You could say that was my foundation stone which helped me enjoy reading and considering this habit  as one of the best sources of entertainment ever.

After that, I gathered the courage to explore foreign writings.  I went back to that YouTube video  review of  “ The Book Thief”. It was a video from “ Hailey in Bookland”. I watched a couple of other videos and found that almost every Booktuber loves Harry Potter . This is when I told my husband that I wish someone gifted me this series . I had never ever thought that he would take this so seriously . He bought me the box set of Harry Potter series that valentine and I finished all the 7 books within 2 months. I was obsessed with this series and I still  am.

After that, there was no looking back, I started subscribing to more and more Booktubers and adding their recommended books to my amazon cart . I have to say that it was not like I enjoy everything that they recommend but I cannot deny that most of them I loved and have become my favorites. There were even a few that were so bad that I regret  buying . I still rely on my favorite Booktubers when it comes to book buying.

I am certainly hopeful that soon I will trust my own choices and read a book without checking out its reviews first . So far, I have never bought a book simply by reading its synopsis at the back of the book. But I am sure I am growing as a Reader pretty fast and soon I shall start exploring everything on my own and may be some day I might start recommending books. 😉

When it comes to genre , I personally enjoy fantasy the most, but I don't mind exploring other genres . As far as reading groups/levels are concerned , I enjoy everything- from middle grade novels to young adult to adult levels . My favorite books so far includes- the entire Harry Potter series and  The Book Thief , these  are the set of books that  I don't mind reading again and again.

So that was all about my journey as a Reader in the short span of 2 years or so . In this space I shall be sharing my thoughts on all the Books that I have loved as well as the Books I will be reading.

I remember buying the next book in the series The Angel’s Game almost immediately after finishing it. I was so impressed by the writing and plot that I had to read all the books from this author- translator duo. Considering this being a part of series called Cemetery of Forgotten Books , I was under the impression that this book was either a prequel or sequel to The Shadow of the Wind . But after reading a few chapters , I realised that although the story was set in Barcelona and features the infamous Cemetery of Forgotten Books (which was also a

RADIO SILENCE by Alice Oseman | Book Review

TITLE: Radio Silence AUTHOR: Alice Oseman PUBLICATION YEAR: 2016 GENRE: Young Adult Contemporary + LGBT Fiction PAGE COUNT: 403 FORMAT: Paperback AVAILABLE   AT : amazon   I came to know about this book through booktube . There was a booktuber who in one of her   videos started crying while talking about it. I was really taken aback by that. It was really heartening to see how a certain book can bring out such overwhelming emotions . I checked out   a few more reviews- all of which were positive   before buying this one. It was unanimously rated as a 5 star book . Obviously my expectations going into this book were super high. The story is about a girl named Frances who is extremely studious . She calls herself a study machine. Other than academics, the only thing she is obsessed with is a YouTube show UNIVERSE CITY /RADIO SILENCE . Her happiness knew no bounds   when one day, the mystery creator   impressed by her fan art   asked her to create some ar

CHENNAI BOOK FAIR 2019 | The Books I Bought

In my New Year Resolution tag ( see here ) , I kinda promised myself to finish my TBR pile before going on my next book shopping spree. As expected I managed to break my resolution even before 2 weeks of setting it. The reason – CHENNAI BOOK FAIR 2019 . I went to the book fair yesterday and bought a couple of books.   I know...   I have absolutely no SELF CONTROL whatsoever. But in my defence, these books were available at really cheap prices . Also , might I add this book fair was the best I have ever been to.   I ended up straining my leg muscles due to all the walking around and checking out each and every stall . By the time I reached my house , I had severe headaches and leg pains – but all of this was totally WORTH IT...!! 😊 Following are the books I bought – 1.        The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga – I heard about this book back when I was preparing for my competitive exams . I was memorising the current affairs and that is when I learnt that this book had won
