BOOK REVIEW - I've Got Your Number by SOPHIE KINSELLA

PUBLICATION YEAR: 2012
GENRE: Chick lit
PAGE COUNT: 459
FORMAT: Paperback
AVAILABLE  AT : amazon

Lately I have been reading a lot of books with dark themes . I needed something light and fluffy to relax my mind. Early this year , I had read this book called “ My Not So Perfect Life “ by Sophie Kinsella and I remember enjoying  it . I wanted to read something like that .  So I went to the internet and searched for the best books by this author  and the book “ I’ve Got Your Number” popped up.

Before writing the review, I have to admit that I am not really a big fan of the chick lit genre. This is surprising because a few years back, I used to only enjoy contemporary romance/drama. I found them relevant and somewhat relatable. But soon my reading taste evolved and now I rarely read this genre of books. Hence,  I had a hard time reviewing it.  I  had a great time reading it though . 😊

The story is told from the perspective of the main character Poppy who is getting married to her fiance Magnus  in a few weeks time. However during a party, she lost her engagement ring which happened to be a family heirloom. Things went further downhill when her phone got stolen and she started panicking. Luckily she found an abandoned phone in the trash bin and started using it . She gave that number to everyone around with the hope that they  might give her information about her missing ring. Soon she found out that the phone belonged to the PA of a successful businessman called Sam. She convinced Sam that he let her use the phone for a while with the agreement/condition that she would  forward him all his official messages from the phone  to his number.

With a goofy main character like Poppy, the story became  funny right from the start. It had witty dialogues and the circumstances she gets herself into were extremely hilarious. I dont think I have ever laughed so much while reading a book. I loved the scenes involving  the  interactions with her  future in laws who were highly acclaimed intellectuals in their respective fields   . Those were some of the funniest moments in the book. Apart from the LOL moments, I also enjoyed the fact that there were some familial elements as well. The subplots involving friendships, the communications , being scared to tell the truth, trying to get approval of in-laws etc were quite relatable .

The main protagonist Poppy was either downright nosy or she was trying to distract herself from the reality that she was getting married in two weeks. One may say she was a  “ curious soul ” but I would disagree as she seemed only interested in Sam and nobody else – not even her own life. This was a bit annoying.  At times she got into my nerves . I found her too dramatic and quite problematic as a person. Instead of focussing on her life, she seemed too interested in the affairs of Sam. This behaviour was getting her into more and more troubles  and she never seemed to learn her lessons. I would have despised her in real life but I enjoyed her as a character in this story. I guess, such  flawed behaviour  got her into  hilarious sticky situations in the first place  which made the story entertaining .

The other characters were forgettable except for may be- Sam and Poppy’s  mother in law. Sam was the typical alleged successful bachelor from any ROMCOM movie who finds the goofy female lead adorable. Poppy’s future in laws were absolutely fantastic and they had the best comic scenes in the book. Other characters which included  the fiance, a couple of  friends and colleagues of both poppy and sam did not exactly make a mark.

What I liked about the book was that although it belonged to the “ Contemporary Romance” genre, we see a story which has so much more to it than just romance. There was drama, comedy and just the right amount of romance. Also there were these footnotes which added some extra fun elements  to the narrative.

The pacing of the book was alright. I was able to read the first half of the book pretty fast as a major chunk of it had some of the most memorable funny scenes. After that though, with all the subplot involving a major  scandal and  office politics of Sam , I got a little bored. Then towards the end as we head towards the climax , I started to enjoy again. The climax was predictable and cheesy , I adored it nonetheless.

Overall this book was cute and a bit dramatic just like any ROMCOM  movie. It was a fun one time read. Never before has it happened that I hated the main character yet loved the book. It has most certainly  fulfilled my criteria of a fun fluffy read and I would highly recommend it. 😊

RATING- 🌕🌕🌕🌕 (4/5)

I remember buying the next book in the series The Angel’s Game almost immediately after finishing it. I was so impressed by the writing and plot that I had to read all the books from this author- translator duo. Considering this being a part of series called Cemetery of Forgotten Books , I was under the impression that this book was either a prequel or sequel to The Shadow of the Wind . But after reading a few chapters , I realised that although the story was set in Barcelona and features the infamous Cemetery of Forgotten Books (which was also a

CHENNAI BOOK FAIR 2019 | The Books I Bought

In my New Year Resolution tag ( see here ) , I kinda promised myself to finish my TBR pile before going on my next book shopping spree. As expected I managed to break my resolution even before 2 weeks of setting it. The reason – CHENNAI BOOK FAIR 2019 . I went to the book fair yesterday and bought a couple of books.   I know...   I have absolutely no SELF CONTROL whatsoever. But in my defence, these books were available at really cheap prices . Also , might I add this book fair was the best I have ever been to.   I ended up straining my leg muscles due to all the walking around and checking out each and every stall . By the time I reached my house , I had severe headaches and leg pains – but all of this was totally WORTH IT...!! 😊 Following are the books I bought – 1.        The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga – I heard about this book back when I was preparing for my competitive exams . I was memorising the current affairs and that is when I learnt that this book had won
