CHENNAI BOOK FAIR 2019 | The Books I Bought

In my New Year Resolution tag ( see here ) , I kinda promised myself to finish my TBR pile before going on my next book shopping spree. As expected I managed to break my resolution even before 2 weeks of setting it. The reason – CHENNAI BOOK FAIR 2019. I went to the book fair yesterday and bought a couple of books.  I know...  I have absolutely no SELF CONTROL whatsoever. But in my defence, these books were available at really cheap prices . Also , might I add this book fair was the best I have ever been to.  I ended up straining my leg muscles due to all the walking around and checking out each and every stall . By the time I reached my house , I had severe headaches and leg pains – but all of this was totally WORTH IT...!! 😊

Following are the books I bought –

1.       The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga – I heard about this book back when I was preparing for my competitive exams . I was memorising the current affairs and that is when I learnt that this book had won the Man Booker prize for the year 2008. This will be my first time reading a booker prize winning novel. The story follows the extraordinary journey of a man named Balram who hails from rural india . he finally gets a major break from the darkness of his  village life when a rich man hires him as a chauffeur in Delhi. The synopsis says , “ MEET BALRAM HALWAI, the ‘White Tiger’ : servant, philosopher, entrepreneur, murderer. Over the course of sven nights, by the scattered light of a preposterous chandelier, Balram tells his story....”

2.       The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid- This is yet another acclaimed novel that I bought . This was apparently shortlisted for the Man Booker prize for the year 2007. I think there was also a movie made out of it a couple of years back. The synopsis at the back of this book talks about a conversation between a bearded man and some American stranger. This bearded man with perfect immaculate English speaks about his love affair with an American woman and his eventual abandonment of America.

3.       The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon – After reading the synopsis at the back , I was flipping through the pages of this book. And I found a few illustrations which intrigued me further to buy this one. It is a murder mystery novel about a detective Christopher Boone who has Asperger’s syndrome. The murder of his neighbour’s dog sets him on a terrifying journey which eventually turns his life upside down.

4.       The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion- It is a romance fiction about a genetics professor Don Tillman who devices a  scientific questionnaire called The Wife Project to find his perfect life partner. However, his plans are set off course when he meets Rosie ‘the world’s most incompatible woman’. She manages to throw Don’s safe and ordered life into chaos.

5.       Poison study by Maria V. Snyder – I have an ebook copy of this one and I have been meaning to read it for so long. It is a fantasy novel about a young girl Yelena who is imprisoned for murder. As she waits for her execution, she is given a chance to live on the condition that she will become the Commander’s Food Taster. The story seems something right up my alley and now that I have a physical copy, I am sure this will be on top of my priority list .

6.       Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter – There was a time when I used to love reading crime/Mystery/ detective novels . But soon I found them quite repetitive and predictable. I have heard great things about this author and hence I picked two books from her. This novel is centres around two missing girls in two different decades  and the probability that these two incidents might be somehow linked.

7.       Broken by Karin Slaughter – This is the author’s tenth novel where she combines the characters from her previous detective series to solve a series of murders in a small town in Grant County. I hope it reads like a standalone as I have not read the previous novels in the series.

 8.       A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin – This is the fourth book of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE / GAME OF THRONES Series.   I bought it  solely because I was getting it at a pretty reasonable price .

TITLE: The Way of Kings   (Book 1 of THE STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE   series) AUTHOR: Brandon Sanderson PUBLICATION YEAR: 2010 GENRE: High Fantasy PAGE COUNT: 1252 FORMAT: Mass Market Paperback AVAILABLE   AT : amazon It took me almost a month to finish this mammoth of a book “ The Way of Kings “ by Brandon Sanderson . It was a huge commitment and   I enjoyed every bit of it. At first glance, you may feel a bit intimidated but I urge you to give it a try. It is totally worth your time. Throughout this whole month , I was so immersed in this story and its characters that I was constantly thinking about it even when I was not reading the book. I might have made atleast a million theories and multiple predictions about the story . Honestly, I have never been so involved in a story to this extent. This post may seem less like a review and more like me singing praises for this book. I a...

Book Review - THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins

PUBLICATION YEAR: 2008 GENRE: Dystopian Fiction PAGE COUNT: 374 FORMAT: Paperback AVAILABLE AT : amazon If you happen to search for the top 10 book series to binge read, The Hunger Games trilogy is definitely going to feature in it. It was published way back in 2008 but I think it became popular with the subsequent release of its movies in 2012. Although I had not seen the movies , I knew a thing or two about the story. Luckily there were no major   spoilers   while going into this book. The story is about this girl Katniss who enters into a reality show called “ The Hunger Games” . The format of this game is a bit like “ Survival of the Fittest ” or “ The Last Man Standing ”. Two people – a boy and   a girl from each of the 12 districts of this place called Panem   are selected randomly every year to participate . Contestants are supposed to kill each other in order to win the coveted title. In addition to that, th...
