I was eagerly waiting for the release of this book ever since I read its first installment Children of Blood and Bones back in 2018. I remember giving it a full 5/5 rating (see review here) and even mentioning it in my favorite reads of that year. I bought this book and kept it in my shelf for a while before finally picking it up last week. The reason for this hesitation was goodreads. I saw a couple of my friends on goodreads going on a rant about how bad this book turned out to be. Most of them gave it a pretty average rating. So finally when I decided to pick this book up , I lowered my expectations to bare minimum. I am pleasantly surprised at how much I ended up enjoying it.

Synopsis-

This series is an African inspired fantasy story that is based on a land called Orisha.
In the first book we learn that magic has been eradicated by the current monarchy. The people with magical abilities( called Maji)and their children  are treated as second class citizens. Soon a maji Zelie and a rogue princess Amari work their way through to bring back magic.
The second book  starts off right where the first book ended. Zelie and Amari have successfully brought back magic to the land of Orisha . But this has caused more trouble than before causing even more conflict between the Maji and the Monarchy. I can't reveal much because that would be potential SPOILERS.

What I Liked?

1.       Short chapters - Just like Children of blood and bone , this too had short and crisp chapters with occasional cliffhangers/plot twists every once in a while which made it an absolute page turner.
2.       Fast paced -It had enough drama to keep me engaged and I can't think of a single dull moment in the story which could have ruined its pacing . It was not confined to just magic and war. It had other elements to keep me hooked.
3.       Lovely writing style- I loved the writing style of the author despite it being a bit flowery and over the top at times. The metaphors used were simple and easy to understand.
4.       Nostalgia - Last but certainly not the least, I absolutely loved getting back into this magical world and following the extraordinary lives  of some of my  favorite fictional characters - Zelie, Amari and others .

What I didn't Like?

1.       After reading Children of Blood and Bone, Zelie became my all time favorite fictional characters . But this book failed to do enough justice to her character. I ended up liking and thereby rooting for characters other than her.I remember loving Zelie more than Amari or Inan. But this time around, I was more interested in following the lives of Amari and others .
2.       There were a couple of major plot twists meant for shocking the readers . But it failed to impress me.
However the cliffhanger at the end blew my mind.
Overall, I had a good time reading this book and I can't wait for  the third and final book in the series to come out. It wasn’t as fabulous as the first one, but a pretty decent second book to a trilogy.

RATING- 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (4/5)

I remember buying the next book in the series The Angel’s Game almost immediately after finishing it. I was so impressed by the writing and plot that I had to read all the books from this author- translator duo. Considering this being a part of series called Cemetery of Forgotten Books , I was under the impression that this book was either a prequel or sequel to The Shadow of the Wind . But after reading a few chapters , I realised that although the story was set in Barcelona and features the infamous Cemetery of Forgotten Books (which was also a

RADIO SILENCE by Alice Oseman | Book Review

TITLE: Radio Silence AUTHOR: Alice Oseman PUBLICATION YEAR: 2016 GENRE: Young Adult Contemporary + LGBT Fiction PAGE COUNT: 403 FORMAT: Paperback AVAILABLE   AT : amazon   I came to know about this book through booktube . There was a booktuber who in one of her   videos started crying while talking about it. I was really taken aback by that. It was really heartening to see how a certain book can bring out such overwhelming emotions . I checked out   a few more reviews- all of which were positive   before buying this one. It was unanimously rated as a 5 star book . Obviously my expectations going into this book were super high. The story is about a girl named Frances who is extremely studious . She calls herself a study machine. Other than academics, the only thing she is obsessed with is a YouTube show UNIVERSE CITY /RADIO SILENCE . Her happiness knew no bounds   when one day, the mystery creator   impressed by her fan art   asked her to create some ar

CHENNAI BOOK FAIR 2019 | The Books I Bought

In my New Year Resolution tag ( see here ) , I kinda promised myself to finish my TBR pile before going on my next book shopping spree. As expected I managed to break my resolution even before 2 weeks of setting it. The reason – CHENNAI BOOK FAIR 2019 . I went to the book fair yesterday and bought a couple of books.   I know...   I have absolutely no SELF CONTROL whatsoever. But in my defence, these books were available at really cheap prices . Also , might I add this book fair was the best I have ever been to.   I ended up straining my leg muscles due to all the walking around and checking out each and every stall . By the time I reached my house , I had severe headaches and leg pains – but all of this was totally WORTH IT...!! 😊 Following are the books I bought – 1.        The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga – I heard about this book back when I was preparing for my competitive exams . I was memorising the current affairs and that is when I learnt that this book had won
